A Franchise Based on Stewardship
With a Chief Stewarding Officer (CSO) as a Leader and Visionary
Since purchasing the company back in 2003, Doug Dwyer has never named himself as CEO of DreamMaker, even though he is the earthly owner and head of the company. Rather, his official title is President and CSO. There are several reasons for this somewhat unusual title selection. And if he’s not CEO, who is? Simply put, God, our Heavenly Father, is CEO of DreamMaker Corporate.
Some backstory: As a Christian, when Doug was making the decision to purchase DreamMaker, he wanted to be sure that this was in God’s will for him – he didn’t want to rush into something without His blessing. As he prayed and thought about the decision, he felt peace and confidence about taking the next step and becoming the owner of DreamMaker. Around that same time, he completed an audio program called God’s Principles for Operating a Business. He also read a book by Stanley Tam titled God Owns My Business. Both resources had a large impact on the way Doug viewed business and his role in it.
When he first purchased DreamMaker, Doug knew he wasn’t above the self-important tendencies of thinking “I did this” or “look at me”, so from the beginning, he resolved and promised God to never name himself CEO of DreamMaker in order to protect against pride. Instead, Doug decided to look at God as CEO of this business – a constant reminder of who is actually in charge and the ultimate owner.
So where does the CSO title come in? After prayer and research, stewardship was the best description for Doug’s role as leader of DreamMaker. Stewardship meant ‘to manage something on behalf of someone else, at their direction’. Having God as CEO of DreamMaker means consulting Him for direction about the future and for daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual and longer-term decisions, and reporting to Him in leading DreamMaker. With this organization, we are continually working to get better in business with love and excellence, grounded in God’s truth, and this is reflected in our mission statement:
To Glorify God,
To be Faithful Stewards,
And to Positively Impact Lives.
With God as CEO, He has led us to love our neighbor as ourselves. Following are a few of the results He’s led us to produce:
Franchise Business Review
- #1 in Home Services Industry for a total of 2 years
- Top 50 in our category (75 units or less) for 10 years in a row
- Top 50 overall regardless of size for 5 years now
GuildQuality
- 97% recommendation rate (based on customers submitted by franchisees for surveying)
NAICS – North American Industry Classification System
- Our average franchise produced $1,516,480 in annual revenue in 2023 and this puts them in the Top 5% in revenue of remodelers in the entire country. Our number one franchise is in the Top .5% (top half of percent).
The Reason for these Results?
As President and Chief Stewarding Officer of DreamMaker Corporate, Doug looks to God as CEO, and he trusts Him to lead and guide as he stewards this company on His behalf and with His help. Doug has been blessed to be in this role for over two and a half decades, and continues to look forward to all that God has in store for DreamMaker in the years to come.
Nurturing a Purpose-Driven Culture in Every DreamMaker Franchise
By making it our daily mission to serve everyone we meet and do business with in this manner, we become a company that people genuinely want to work with.
Mary Baxter, DreamMaker franchise owner and designer, says that when she decided to join the DreamMaker family, she and her husband had been considering retirement but when they sat down to discuss the reality of it all, she told him she wasn’t ready and still wanted to do design. So when she was looking for where to place her design ambitions and skills, it was DreamMaker which really stood out for her. And why? It was our Code of Values™ that sold her.
